The Japanese word Shiatsu means 'finger pressure'. It is the name
of a therapy developed in Japan based on traditional massage,
stretching and breathing techniques. Shiatsu therapists use the
meridian system of traditional Chinese medicine to help them
determine on which points in the body to apply pressure to rebalance
the body's energy flow ki (ch'i or qi in
Chinese medicine). Shiatsu
therapists use fingers, knees, elbows, knuckles, palms and feet
to release blockages of ki, applying a pressure which comes from the
body weight.
Diagnosis is done by palpating the abdomen (or hara) which is
considered central to overall health and vitality as all the meridian
pathways connect to this area.. Pulses in the wrist are also read,
as well as facial signs. Once the diagnosis is made the shiatsu
therapist works in a series of sequences through the body to tonify
and disperse ki, using pressure and gentle stretches combined with
breathing techniques. Shiatsu is done on a clothed patient lying on
a floor mat. Dietary advice according to macrobiotic principles is
also often given.
Shiatsu is a holistic treatment considered to benefit body and mind.
It is said to be particularly effective in treating chronic pain,
digestive and respiratory problems and stress related illnesses. |
